John Barclay
Clinical Psychologist
We all face times when life feels difficult or overwhelming. Talking with a psychologist provides a safe, confidential space to make sense of your thoughts, feelings and experiences.
Together, we'll work towards practical, evidence based ways of understanding what's happening and finding a path forward that feels right for you.
About Me
I am a Registered Clinical Psychologist with more than 20 years experience. I work in private practice in Wellington on Fridays offering therapy services for adult individuals. I am skilled at addressing anxiety, depression, grief & change, anger, stress & fatigue, sleep difficulties, self-esteem & identity (sexual, gender, cultural), neurodiversity, ADHD, trauma, parenting & relationship issues, health issues and more.
You may end therapy at any time. A final session is recommended to review progress and discuss ongoing support or referral options.
To ensure professional quality, aspects of clinical work may be discussed with a supervisor, who is also bound by strict confidentiality. Client-identifying details are not disclosed.
Between sessions, contact should be limited to scheduling or administrative matters (phone, text, or email). I’m unable to provide emergency or crisis services.
If you require urgent assistance, please contact:
• Crisis Assessment & Treatment Team (CATT): 0800 745 477
• Lifeline: 0800 543 354 or text HELP to 4357

Records and Privacy
All information shared is kept strictly confidential, except where disclosure is required or permitted by law, including:

2. If records are ordered by a court or tribunal.
3. When you consent for information to be shared (e.g. with your GP or another clinician).
Any disclosure will be discussed with you where possible.
In a small community it can happen by chance that I am working separately with two people who know each other. I cannot communicate about this because of each person’s rights to confidentiality.
Confidentiality
For private clients:
• Standard Fee: NZ$180 per 50 minute session (incl. GST, if any).
• Payment is due on the day of the appointment by cash or online banking.
• Cancellations: Except in the case of illness, 24 hours’ notice is required to avoid being charged half the full session fee.
Fees and Payment
Therapy provides a confidential and supportive environment to explore personal, emotional, or behavioural issues and to work toward agreed goals. The psychologist’s role is to guide and support—not to give directives or “fix” problems. You are an active participant in your own progress. Therapy sessions generally last 50 minutes, with frequency depending on need and availability.
